Local Students Targeted Online

The local media has been reporting a new issue that they are identifying as a blackmailing scheme.

This scheme is primarily targeting school age females and there have been several reported incidents in Yates County.

It is alleged that the perpetrators are obtaining possibly embarrassing posts and then contacting students.  They are threatening to publicize the embarrassing posts unless inappropriate photographs are sent to them.

We are going to all classes in grades 6-12 to make them aware of this situation and to encourage anyone with information or who may have been contacted to tell their parents, school officials, or the legal authorities.

This will also be an opportunity to remind our students of good digital citizenship practices and the importance of considering the impact of anything that is posted or digitized.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact PCS at 607-522-3795.
